6 pictures stitched together using PhotoStitch and GIMP; background burned in GIMP; made using a tripod and bulb exposure.
Treble Clef - Alto Saxophone - Flute - Sousaphone - Trumpet - Eighth Note

A huge thanks to my band friends who helped out with this :faint: It was difficult, but a lot of fun. Note- the people pictured actually play the instruments they are holding in marching band. ;)

Treble clef - One person drew with 2 glowsticks
Saxophone - One model held the saxophone, one other person drew the sax with glowsticks
Flute - One person modeled and drew it themself
Sousaphone - One model to hold the sousaphone, one person drew the bottom with a glowstick, another person stood on a stepstool and swung a glowstick on a string to make the bell
Trumpet - One model held it and made the valves and base, and one extra person made the bell.
Eighth note - One model

How we did it: I set up the camera about 6-7 feet away on a tripod. First I set the focus. I had a model (one of the people holding instruments) stand where the picture was being taken. I set the lens to auto focus and took a picture in auto mode with flash to set the focus on the person. Then I set the lens back to manual focus to lock in the focus. Next, I set the camera to manual mode. At first, I set the exposure manually, but it was timed, so sometimes the subjects drawing with glowsticks didn't finish in time. Instead, I set my camera to "bulb" exposure, which lets you hold down the shutter for as long as you want. Usually it's better to use a remote shutter with bulb exposure, but as long as your tripod is steady and you press the shutter button lightly, it won't shake very much. However, bulb exposure uses a flash, so you can either turn flash off manually, or cover the flash with your hands (which is what I did - resulting in many light explosions in my face x.x) Using bulb exposure allowed the subjects to take all the time they needed to draw in the air with glowsticks, because the exposure continued as long as I held the button down. The slower you draw with the glowstick, the brighter it is. =) We worked together to use these techniques to create the picture. I hope this helped!

Not included: Bass drum, C whole note, trombone, tenor drums

this is quite an awesome picture, except... the saxophone looks like a soprano or a bass clarinet
and why is there no clarinet? :(

Yeah, the saxophone is too long and not fat enough. It was extremely difficult to do though, and that was the best result. We only made the instruments that were played by people who were helping out with the light painting. I'm planning to add more or redo this sometime though. :aww: Thanks for the comment.

yeah, I could see it being rather difficult. I've tried to draw Vash before (if you get where the name's from you're doubly awesome) and the only thing I drew before giving up was his neck.
and the redo would be a good idea. I'm not saying it's bad, just that maybe you might be more experienced now or something, leading to a better result (and more instruments :D)

Umm....I think he's an anime character. Name sorta rings a bell :XD: Yeah, I need a bit more practice before I try this again. It certainly was fun to do, and certainly a spur-of-the-moment kind of thing, we didn't really plan anything out.

By the way, I'll check out your gallery as soon as I get the chance :) If you're interested in light painting I have more amateur-ish kind of stuff, but I'd appreciate any feedback.

yeah, he's a badass expert marksman with the nickname of the Humanoid Typhoon who's also a pacifist 'cause he's just awesome like that :D

I could totally see that. anything involving a glowstick is usually rather entertaining, and plans tend to streamline things.

erm... my gallery is kinda not-full, and what it does have is mainly emoy poetry that is really no fun to read if you're in a good mood.

and I shall check it out and comment and all that good stuff.
